Black and grey realism tattoo of an anatomical heart with engraved-style waves, a hand and script on the chest.

Anatomical heart with waves on the chest

Realism · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A detailed anatomical heart is drawn in black ink on the chest, with its right side opened to reveal rolling waves in stippled and hatched linework. A hand holding a pen or tool and small fragments of script appear across the vessels and outer wall. The shading moves from dense blacks to soft greys, and the design is centred on the chest with plain skin around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The surgeon wanted the heart drawn before it cooled, so I stood at the foot of the table with my ink pot wedged between my boots and sketched while Master Venn lifted the organ out of the drowned fisherman's chest. The man had been dragged from the harbour at Porthkerris that morning, grey as slate, with weed still knotted in his boots. Venn turned the heart in the lamplight and said the valves looked like the mouths of small shells, then asked me to write that down in the margin, so I did, in my neatest hand.

He cut the right side open along its wall to show the chambers, and I had to look away a moment. When I looked back there were waves inside, or I thought there were. The muscle lay in long curls, pale where the lamp caught the crests and dark in the troughs, exactly as the swell looks from the cliff path when the wind goes round to the south. I told Venn so. He laughed and said I had been too long among the gulls and the fish-wives, and that a copyist's work was to record what was there, not what he wished was there.

But I kept the drawing that way. Each night I added a little more: a hand reaching over the rim of the vessel, holding a pen as though it were copying the tide tables, and the words I had scribbled along the outer wall, written small so nobody would read them unless they were looking. Venn died the winter after, and the Guild took the plates. Only my sheet went home with me, folded inside my hat.

Ask me now what the sea has to do with a heart, and I will give you Venn's answer, which is that both are driven by something you cannot see. Then I will show you the sheet, and you may decide for yourself which of us was wrong.
