Anatomical heart with arrow and banner

Traditional · Mixed · Flash

The design shows a pink anatomical heart with blue veins and an arrow with a blue fletching piercing its upper section. A red and yellow rose sits at the lower right, with green leaves and a sprig extending beside the heart. A cream banner with black outlined lettering reading EL CORAZON runs across the bottom, and the whole design is framed on a beige background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tomás, the rose man came round again tonight with the last of the red ones, the ones with the yellow heart in the middle that Papá used to call sunburnt. I bought three for the kitchen and he threw in a sprig of green for nothing, which is how I knew he had been crying. His wife has gone back to Granada, and he says the bell at the corner of Calle Feria rings wrong now, one note flat, as if it is missing somebody.

I should tell you the thing I have been turning over since you left. On Thursday I found your old tin of pencils in the drawer, and under the sharpener was the paper you drew the heart on when you were fourteen. You had written EL CORAZON across the bottom in capitals that leaned like they were running for the tram. I laughed until I had to sit down on the step. Then I read it again and understood you had never meant it as a joke.

So on Saturday I took the paper to Mateo, who still does lettering for the fishermen. He studied the arrow for a long while and said the blue fletching was the hard part, that you had to pick a colour the sea could not wash out. We settled on the shade the river turns at six in the morning. He will paint the whole design onto a board for you when you come home, and I have paid the deposit, so you cannot argue.

The lamp in the window is lit. Come home before the feast of Santa Ana, or I will send the rose man out after you with a bunch of those sunburnt flowers. Your sister, Inés.
