Sugar skull with rose and floral eyes
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A stylised sugar skull drawn in bold black outline on a white background, decorated with a large rose and leaves across the crown. The eye sockets contain symmetrical flower motifs, and the cheeks, nose and jaw are filled with dots, scrolls and leaf shapes. The design is entirely black and white with no shading or grey tones, and it is centred on a plain background.

Hannah stood by the trestle table in the sports hall of Ashgrove Comprehensive, where someone had strung paper marigolds from the basketball hoops. It was the class of 2002, twenty-two years on, and the name badges still had our Year 11 photographs on them, which made everyone look like they were about to be arrested. She was holding a plastic cup of squash she had no intention of drinking when Dev Lowry came through the swing doors from the kitchen with a tray.

On it sat a row of sugar skulls, each one iced white, each with a small rose piped into the forehead in red. He had always drawn in the back of her maths book, skulls with flowers in the eye sockets, and she had told him it was morbid and that he'd end up in a shop selling bin bags. He set one down in front of her on a paper napkin. "Nobody else would remember that," he said. "You told me to stop doing them on your planner."
The rose on the skull had a petal folded back at the edge, exactly the way he used to fold the corner of a page when he was thinking. She remembered the planner. She had thrown it in a skip the summer her dad moved out, along with most of the things that year had made her feel stupid for keeping. Dev talked about his nan's altar, about the November after she died when he couldn't stop making sugar, and how the stall at the school's Day of the Dead fair had started out as a favour and now paid his rent.
When the lights dimmed for the slideshow, she picked the skull up and turned it over in her hands. The icing was cold and smelt of vanilla. Somewhere behind the projector screen, someone was laughing at a photograph of a Year 9 cricket team. Hannah put the skull in her handbag, wrapped carefully in the napkin, and felt for the first time all evening that she had come to the right place.
