Sugar skull with roses and flowers

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A stylised sugar skull fills the frame, with red roses in each eye socket, a brown cross on the forehead and pink and yellow flowers at the top and bottom. Bold black outlines define the swirling white scrollwork, green leaves and roses on the cheeks, which are shaded in pale blue and pink. The design sits against a plain black background with a centred, symmetrical composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sugar skull rides on the dashboard because your uncle Teo said it would keep the road honest. Its roses have faded to the colour of old brick since the summer you drove it out past Caborca, and the brown cross on its brow has chipped where the afternoon sun comes through the windscreen. You don't believe in any of it, but you have never once taken that stretch of highway without glancing at it first.

Near the fork where the tarmac gives out, a boy with marigolds in a plastic bucket steps into the road and waves both arms. His name is Ignacio, he says, and his grandmother is waiting in Altar with a cake she has been baking since dawn. You tell him the road is long and the fuel is short. He doesn't argue. He just presses a sugar skull wrapped in newspaper into your palm, still warm from his pocket, and climbs into the passenger seat before you can say anything more.

He talks the whole way about the dead coming home, how they follow the marigold petals up the dusty lanes and sit down at their old tables. The sky goes orange, then violet, and the dunes turn the colour of the bread his grandmother bakes. At the cemetery gate he jumps out, bucket swinging, and runs between the white crosses without looking back. You sit with the engine ticking and the newspaper in your lap, unsure whether you have been paid or simply asked to stay.

In the morning the sugar skull on the dashboard has a new rose painted on one cheek, bright as a fresh cut, in a hand far too small to be yours. Beside it the dashboard is dusted with yellow petals. You stop at the fork again on the way back, but the road is empty and the bucket is gone. You drive on with the windows down, and the cross on the skull catches the light.
