Inside, on a bed of wet moss, lay a heart the size of a fist. It had been cut clean, and its great vessels still hung from the top like the roots of a pulled tree. Out of those vessels grew stems. Marigolds opened on them, and a sprig of rue, and something with feathered leaves that dropped a little yellow dust onto the moss. The heart moved, slowly, the way a sleeper's chest moves.

When the soldiers burned the yard, I came away with this one, because it was the only part of her still green.' He looked at the forms on his desk, which had no box for this.

He stamped the paper and pushed it back across the table. 'Nothing to declare,' he said. She closed the lid and went down the road. On the far side of the wall, where the track dropped into the valley, the first marigolds were already opening in the ditch, orange as a lamp, and nobody had planted them.
