Black and grey botanical tattoo of a peony, roses, small blossoms and rosemary sprigs wrapped around the outer thigh.

Black and grey floral bouquet on the thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large bouquet of peonies, open roses, small five-petalled blossoms, buds and sprigs of rosemary-like foliage, arranged in a vertical cluster that runs down the outer thigh. The linework is fine and detailed, with soft graded shading on the petals and leaves that gives the flowers volume. The design is entirely black and grey and fills most of the frame against plain, pale skin.

The van coughs twice past the last water tank at Scarrow Wells, and you feel the heat come up through the floor like a held breath. In the back, forty stems of peony wrapped in wet newspaper are already sighing in their buckets. The order was for a Saturday wedding in Halvern, four hours south, and the bride had wanted pale pink, but the wholesaler sent what he had. You have rosemary bundled in the gaps, the grey-green kind that smells of turpentine and Sunday roasts, and every bump on the track shakes its scent through the cab.

Near Dunmore Cut the engine gives up. You sit with your hands on the wheel and watch a dust devil walk across the flats like someone late for something. A lorry pulls up, driver chewing gum, looks at the buckets and says nobody gets married out here anymore. You tell him that is exactly why the peonies were a mistake, and he laughs, and then he drives on, and you are alone with the ticking metal and the flowers.

By dusk you have walked a mile to the signpost for Halvern and back, and you have made a decision you can't quite justify. The bouquet is too heavy to carry far, so you cut the long rosemary sprigs and tuck them into the grille of a dead shrub at the verge, and you lay the open roses on the warm tarmac where the road bends. The bride will get the peonies, bruised but whole, once you are rescued. The rest belongs to the road.

When the recovery truck finally crests the rise, the sky is the colour of pewter and the verge is full of pale petals lifting in the wind. You climb into the cab and do not look back, but you can smell it all the way to Halvern: rosemary, crushed and certain, going on without you.
