Anatomical heart with blossom on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed anatomical heart with visible vessels sends out branches, leaves and small blossom flowers. The heart is drawn with bold outlines, dense hatching and cross-hatching, and soft grey shading on its surfaces. The design is shown in black and grey across the upper arm and shoulder against a pale pink background.

The snow had sealed the Hollin Gate for four days when Mrs Ardley asked me for a knife and a jar of water. I was nineteen and paid in bread and a bed under the eaves, so I fetched both without asking why. She sat by the kitchen range with a cutting from the old cherry in the yard, its buds pink as sugar, and she shaved the bark at a slant the way my grandfather did before he grafted.

"Everyone draws the heart as a pump, Hannah," she said, not looking up. "Nobody draws it as something that's been planted." She had forty years of anatomy lectures behind her and a drawer of sketches she never showed anyone. She unfolded one across the flour-dusted table: a heart opened like a split fig, its great vessels climbing out into twigs, leaves ticked in with a fine nib. Hatching ran over the chambers like frost on a window.
The wind brought the telephone line down on the second night and nobody came. I sat with her while the shutters knocked, and she told me the drawing was for her husband, who had died in the February thaw with his valves failing one by one. She had added the branches afterwards because she could not bear the empty chambers.
In April, when the lane reopened, I went up to the room she had left. The cherry cutting stood on the sill in a jam jar, its stems gone white at the ends, and a pale root was pushing through the water. I packed the drawing in a envelope and kept the jar, and every Sunday since I have changed its water.
