Anatomical heart with nails on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
A purple anatomical heart with visible vessels sits at the centre of the design, pierced by several nails and dripping blood. Green leaves frame the heart against a yellow glow, and a partial dagger design appears at the bottom edge. The heart is rendered with smooth shading and highlights, with bold outlines and saturated colour throughout.

The snow has come down early on Harrow Col, and you are the last traveller still on the track when the hut lamp finally shows through the sleet. Inside, the hearth is banked low and the woman who keeps the hut does not look up from her hammer. Above the door hangs a row of tin hearts, each one pierced through with a square-headed nail, and you count nine before you sit down on the bench.

She says the hearts belong to men who promised to come back over the col and didn't. Each time one fails to return, she cuts a fresh heart from a biscuit tin, drives a nail through it, and hangs it with the others so the house can keep him. You ask whether she has ever been wrong. She sets the hammer down and pours you a cup of something dark that tastes of iron and clover. "The nail is for the one who stays," she says. "The red is for the one who went."
Outside, the wind shifts. You hear boots on the stone path, slow and uneven, and a voice calling a name you have not spoken aloud in eleven years. Your hand goes to the pocket of your coat, where you keep your own tin heart, bent flat from a fall on the scree. The woman reaches for a nail without being asked.
You open the door. The snow comes in across the floorboards like something spilled, and the lamp gutters in the draught. Somewhere below, the voice is still calling, closer now. She taps the hammer twice against the lintel, making room, and you understand that the next heart on the beam will be yours to hang.
