Anatomical heart with paper boat on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
An anatomical heart with its vessels and chambers in bold outline sits on the skin, and its inner chamber holds a paper boat on rolling waves beneath a crescent moon and three star shapes. The sky and sea areas are built from stippled dots, while the heart's outer walls and vessels use clean black linework with lighter grey shading. The design is centred on a plain background of pale skin beside dark leather.

Dear Nell, the generator has died again, so the Wonderland lights are off and I am writing this by the hook-a-duck lamp, which is the only thing on this field that never gives up. Sid says the wheel will turn by Thursday. Sid has said that since Hastings, and the wheel is still a heap of painted spokes under a tarpaulin.

The boy from the bottle stall came to find me this morning with a sodden paper boat in his fist. He had folded it from the back of your last letter, the bit about the sea at Margate and how the tide comes in as if somebody has sent for it. I told him it was a fine boat, and he asked whether it could sail the drainage pond. It sank by the second ripple. He cried a bit, then said the moon would fish it out, so I suppose I have to make that true somehow.
I went down after dark and sat on the cable drum. The crescent was laid across the water like a dropped hairpin, and by the sluice gate the eddy had a boat in it, one I had folded from your letter when nobody was watching. It has been turning round in the same slow circle for an hour and has not gone under. I am told that is no kind of miracle, only the sluice holding it back, but I did not say so to the boy.
The doctor in Leeds wrote back about your valve. I have read the letter eleven times and will tell you the rest when the wheel is turning. Keep the window lamp lit the way you did when we were small and the fair came through. Your loving brother, Tom.
