Geometric anatomical heart on upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a human heart with its upper vessels and aorta drawn in realistic detail. The lower half breaks into angular, faceted panels that look like cut crystal. The top section is built from fine stippled dots, while the faceted section uses shaded planes and outlines, all in black ink and grey tones on the outer upper arm.

The crack ran clean across the middle of the fortune-teller's crystal, a fault like a frozen river. Ada Halloran sat on an upturned crate behind the tent and turned it in her lap until the lamp caught the break. Her uncle had paid eleven pounds for it in Leeds in 1911 and sworn it could see a man's death coming. The crowds had paid a penny each to be told otherwise. Now the rain came through the canvas, the sawdust had gone to mud, and nobody paid for anything.

The lapidary in Halifax said he could take the crack out, but only by cutting the whole stone down. "You'll lose half its weight," he said, turning it under his loupe. "Facets, mind. What shape do you want?" Ada had no answer ready. She thought of her mother's old anatomy book, the plate of the heart with its vessels spreading like bare branches, and asked him to cut it that way. Keep the top whole and clear, she said, and break the lower half into planes that would throw the light about.

When the stone came back in brown paper, the horses were already gone to a farmer outside Skipton. Ada set it on the card table and lit the lamp. Under the cut, she could still make out the ghost of the old plate, the fine dotted stipple of the great vessels rising out of the faceted base. A girl came in from the rain, dripping, and asked whether the crystal could tell her if she would ever leave.

Ada held it up to the lamp. The light broke into a hundred small pieces and scattered across the canvas walls, across the girl's wet face, across the empty chairs. "It can't tell you that," she said, "but it can show you where the light goes."
