Anatomical heart with cosmic scene
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows an anatomical heart with its vessels drawn in bold outline and fine hatched lines. Inside the heart's lower chamber is a night sky with a ringed planet, a smaller planet, a spiral galaxy and scattered stars, all built up with stippled dots. The image is a close crop of skin with a plaid sleeve at the left edge and a partial dark ornamental tattoo at the bottom right.

Sit down by the fire, and mind the dog, he has no manners. You want to know why the Halloran boys never got lost on the Tonopah road? Because their mother kept the sky in her chest, and I don't mean that as a figure of speech.

She came out to the flats in a Ford with no back seat, the year the mine shut, carrying a doctor's bag and a box of planets she'd painted on tin. The bag was empty. She'd sold the instruments in Reno. What she kept was the night. Every evening she sat on the tailgate and let it come down over the mesa, and she named the stars out loud as though they owed her money. Saturn first, always, its rings tilted like a hat on a drunk.
Then came the storm that took the Dunmore truck, and the two boys went out after their father on foot. The dust rose brown, then black, and there was no road, no mesa, nothing. She told them to walk toward the place in their chest where the galaxy turned. Her own heart, she said, had a whole sky folded in its lower room, and if they could find the spiral they could find the way down.
They found it. I won't tell you how. Ask the boys and they'll say it was only a matter of counting stars, and that's true enough, the way a stone is only a stone. Some nights I still see that little spiral wheeling over the Tonopah road, and I think of her tailgate, and of two boys walking home by a light that was never on the outside of anything.
