Anatomical heart with wildflowers
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A single anatomical heart is drawn in fine pencil or ink linework, with its vessels and ventricles shaded in soft greys. Daisy-like flowers, clustered blooms and buds rise from the top of the heart and trail down one side. The design is centred on a plain cream background with generous margins.

Sit yourselves down on the windfalls, no, the good ones, the ones without wasps in. Right. You want the story of Maud Ketteridge and the heart that wouldn't stop flowering, and I'll tell it the way my gran told it to me, sat on this same wall with the Discovery apples going soft in the grass.

Maud kept the orchard at Lower Fenning after her father's knees gave out. Every August she walked the rows with a knife in her apron and a tin of pins, and every August she found some sorry branch that had to come off. She never cried over them. She said a tree tells you what it needs if you bother to look at its insides, and she had learned to look.
One spring a carter dropped a dead surgeon's papers at her gate, drawings from the city, a heart pinned open on a page with its little blue roads inked in fine as hair. Nobody else wanted it. Maud pinned it above the cider press, and the next morning three daisies had pushed up through the top of the drawing, though the paper was dry as a biscuit. Her father swore it was the damp. She said it was the apples thinking.
She grafted those roads onto the old Bramley in the ditch, binding each one with wet string, and by harvest the flowers ran down the trunk like water finding its way to the gate. The children came for them. Maud gave every one a daisy and a bruised apple and told them the same thing she told the trees. So when you're stood here this August and you feel that little pull under your ribs, that's Maud, still walking the rows. Mind the wasps. Go on, take a windfall.
