Anatomical heart with flowers

Botanical · Colour · Flash

The drawing shows a human heart with its vessels and surface detail rendered in soft shading. Flowers, including large daisy-like blooms, a thistle-type head and small buds with leaves, sprout from the top of the heart. The palette is muted pinks, mauves and greys on a plain white background, with the subject centred and isolated.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been coming sideways off the river since six, and by eleven the flower stall under the iron canopy on Tanner's Row was the only thing in the market still standing up straight. Mum had left me the pitch, a tin of pressed daisies and a drawing folded into quarters inside the lid.

The drawing was a heart. Not a valentine, a real one, the kind you'd find in an old medical book, all tubes and soft grey-pink folds. Someone had grown flowers out of the top of it: daisies as wide as saucers, a thistle head, small buds with their leaves still on. Underneath, in pencil so faint I had to tilt it to the lamp, she'd written 'Keep the vessels open.'

A man in a wet anorak asked whether the thistles came from the wholesaler on the ring road. I told him no, they came from a field behind Haworth, where Mum used to cut them at dawn with a penknife and a flask of tea. He bought a bunch of mauve stock and didn't ask what the flowers were for, which was the kindest thing anyone had done all week.

When the shutters came down I took the drawing out again. Under the lamp the pencil said more on the back, in a hand that had got shakier: Flowers only grow where something has been fed. I folded it into the lid, carried the daisies home dripping under my coat, and set them in a jar on the windowsill where the first light would find them.
