Anatomical hearts with roses and flowers
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The left image shows an anatomical heart with its vessels at the top, partly covered by a rose and leaves, on a forearm. The right image shows a similar anatomical heart filled with blooming flowers and foliage, on the side of a thigh. Both tattoos are rendered in black and grey, with fine outlines and stippled dotwork shading across the heart forms.

Sit closer, the officer on the bridge does not care what we say so long as the queue keeps moving. Your grandfather crossed this line with a paper heart folded inside his coat. Not a real one, you understand. A drawing pinned to oilcloth, the kind the schoolmaster in Niš used to hang over the blackboard, all those pipes rising from the top like the roots of an uprooted tree.

The guard unfolded it on the table under the lamp. He turned it sideways, then upside down, then asked what sort of heart had flowers growing out of its chambers. Your grandfather said the sort that had been neglected for thirty years. Roses in the left side, for his wife, who died the winter the wall went up. Lilies where the blood should be, for the sister he never saw again. Ivy climbing the great vessel at the top, because a heart with nothing to climb is only a pump.
The guard laughed, not unkindly, and stamped the paper. He was a young man with a bruise of ink on his thumb, and he asked whether the flowers would wilt in the sun. Your grandfather said that was the whole point. A heart shut in a tin box never has to be watered.
So he walked on into the hills with the drawing against his ribs, and the flowers grew a little more each mile, until there was not much heart left at all, only a garden with a man standing in it. Now hush. The kettle is finally boiling, and the lamp is going out.
