Anatomical heart with flowers on a calf
Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed anatomical heart with visible chambers and vessels is the central subject, surrounded by roses, leaves and a small bud. The linework is fine and the shading is built from stippled dots and hatching, giving the heart a engraved, textured look. The design is entirely black and grey and fills the lower leg vertically against a plain grey background.

The copperplate man came to Harrowby in the spring with a case of needles and a ledger full of drawings nobody in the village had asked for. He set up in the back room of the chandler's, where the light came grey through a window full of rope, and he would not let anyone watch him work. Mrs Pollard's boy was the first to sit for him, and he came out with a bloom of wild roses climbing his shin and a red-black heart at the centre that the boy kept touching through his stocking.

The old net-mender, Abel Thewlis, said the heart was copied from a drowned man the engraver had cut open on a table in Hull, and that every vessel in it had been traced with a hair from the dead man's own head. Nobody believed him, but nobody stopped the children from pressing their fingers to the veins when they thought the engraver was out. The stippling was so fine that from a yard away the leg looked like dusk on a stone wall.
When the engraver left at Michaelmas, he took no payment but a cup of tea and the chandler's dog. Two years later, when the pier had its first winter storm and the lifeboat went out without its coxswain, Mrs Pollard's boy rolled up his trouser leg on the harbour steps and showed the rose heart to anyone who asked. Nobody asked him why. They only looked at the leaves, which were still green where the sea had washed the ink clean around them.
