Coral was at the rail by the stage, doing what she did every Saturday: refusing to dance with anyone who had not first named a ship. He did, and she laughed at how seriously he took it.

He walked home with rope burn across his palm and the waltz still going in his head. When I went down for my coat the next morning I found the bollard still wrapped, and someone had tied a loose bow in the hemp, the kind you tie to hold a boat that means to come back.
