Shaded rose with beads on forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A large open rose with leaves sits on the forearm, shaded in black and grey with soft highlights on the petals. Pink beads wrap around the flower and stems, and bold black swirls and tendrils extend from the base and top of the design. The white tissue background is plain, and the composition centres the tattoo along the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The path into Hollin Wood begins where the last cottage gives up its fence, and you take it at dusk, when the briars start to open. Your grandmother kept a string of pink glass beads in a biscuit tin on the dresser, one bead for every promise she had made to the wood and kept. When the tin went quiet after her funeral, you tipped the beads into your palm and found forty of them, still warm from the hand that had counted them.

At the clearing where the great rose grows over the old stone wall, nobody had ever seen it bloom in winter. It is grey in the dusk, all shadow and folded petals, its leaves dark as wet slate. The black tendrils curl from the roots like the ends of old letters nobody finished. You kneel at the wall, unwind the beads from your wrist where you have worn them since the funeral, and hang them on the lowest thorn, one by one, pink as the inside of a shell.

The rose does not move. You wait until the church clock in Hollin Edge strikes seven, three minutes fast as it has always been, and then you say the thing she used to say at the gate: that you are the one who kept the promise now, and you have come to return what was lent. A petal the colour of old ash unfolds at the centre. Something under the leaves sighs, and the stone beneath your knees grows warm.

You walk home with empty wrists. At the shop the ledger still lists her name against an account that is now settled. On the counter, in the saucer where the change goes, sits one pink bead, and when you pick it up it is warm, the way the last one always was.
