Anchor with ornamental filigree flash design

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A single anchor is drawn in teal linework, with a rope coiled around the shaft and a small star near the base. Behind the anchor, symmetrical scrolls, dots and petal-like curves form a mandala-style ornament. The design is rendered in one teal ink on a cream, speckled background, centred in the frame.

At twenty to four the bed alarm in Bay Six began its thin complaint, and I went down the corridor carrying a cup of tea I had no intention of drinking. "Tell me about the sea," I said, because at midnight he had told me his father fished out of Whitby and that he could still hear the harbour in the radiator pipes. He gave me a look over his half-moon glasses. "Anchor's down," he said. "Just waiting for the tide to turn." I pulled the plastic chair closer and sat. He talked about a trawler called the Margaret Rose and a storm in 1968 that he never told his wife about, and I listened while the saline drip ticked and the window turned from black to the colour of wet slate. By six his breathing had slowed to match the rise and fall of the ambulances outside. The day sister came in with her coat still buttoned and asked how he'd been.

I wrote the handover in the log in my neatest hand: patient settled, observations stable, holding steady. The form had a box for remarks, so I added a small star beside the time, the way my father used to mark a safe return on the chart in his wheelhouse.
