A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had sealed the lane since Tuesday, and Nell Ashworth had been gilding the same ceiling rose for three days because it was the only thing in the Crown Inn she could make behave. Downstairs the landlord was counting tins. Upstairs, under a single bulb, she laid gold size along the petals of a plaster circle cracked by some long-dead frost, and waited for the tack to turn.

Her grandmother had taught her that a line of gold was really a line of patience. You drew it dotted first, a row of pricks with the point of a needle, so the eye would believe in it before the hand committed. Solid where the plaster was whole, dotted where it had crumbled and needed guessing. Nell had never told anyone that the centre pattern was a seed of overlapping rings her grandmother had copied off a church floor in Whitby, circles that touched at exactly the points that made the flower.

Near midnight the cold came through the boards, and Mags, the landlord's daughter, climbed the ladder with a tray of tea and a question. Would the gold stay bright up there? "Gold doesn't tarnish," Nell said. "It just gets buried." She traced the three hanging drops below the medallion, each one pinned to a single point so it could sway, and the larger diamond at the base that held them all still.

Morning brought a plough grinding down the road and a van idling at the gate. Nell packed her brushes and left the ceiling wet with light. Mags stayed on the ladder, looking up, and the thaw had not come yet, so the gold held the lamp and threw it back, a small bright seed in the dark of the room.
