The bell on the far frame rang twice before Nell Harrow reached it, which meant a card had jammed in the Jacquard head again. It was half past two and the lace works on Hockley was supposed to be empty apart from her and the dog asleep under the cutting bench. She pulled the stiff pasteboard free, turned it to the streetlight through the high window, and saw her grandfather's pencil marks on the edge, the same careful hand that had drawn the owl.

He had never woven it. The foreman, Mr Sellers, said an owl on a dressing bench was bad luck, that you'd have men off sick by Friday with the cough and the shakes. So the card had gone into the drawer with the spare hooks and the broken shuttles, and Nell had kept it there for six years without taking it out.

She took it out now. With a bradawl and the hand punch she made the holes herself, one row at a time: the wide staring eyes, the crown of leaves above them, the scalloped feathers running down each side in mirror. Her hands knew the rhythm of the old machines and the work went quicker than she expected, the dog stirring once and settling again, the gas lamp ticking in the corner.

At seven the day shift came in stamping off the rain. Mr Sellers ran his thumb along the new card, then along the cloth coming off the frame, white thread on black ground, and the owl was there looking back at him with its pale, unblinking face. He didn't say a word. He just pulled a fresh roll from the rack and nodded at her to set it up again.
