Anchor with rope and heart

Traditional · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small anchor is shown in the centre of the frame, with a rope motif coiled around the shank and ring. A heart sits within the lower curve of the anchor. The design uses solid black outlines with grey shading on the metal and soft grey tones on the rope, set against pale skin with a blurred edge at the bottom.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rope had gone stiff in the damp, and Mabel Quayle was working the last splice by the generator lamp while the fair folded itself up around her. The dodgems sat under tarpaulin, the candyfloss machine ticked as it cooled, and the wind off the harbour smelt of diesel and low tide. On the hook beside her hung the old anchor her father had hauled out of the bay in 1961, its flukes gone grey with salt, its shank wrapped in a coil of hemp she had been meaning to replace for years.

Eli Brannock sat on an upturned crate by the stall, chewing the stick from a toffee apple and watching her fingers. He was nine and had decided that knots were the only interesting thing on the whole site. "Does the heart on it mean somebody drowned?" he asked, pointing at the little shape tucked into the lower curve. Mabel shook her head. "It means somebody stayed on the quay and kept the light on," she said. "That's what the heart's for. The anchor does the holding."

She tied off the splice with a sailor's whipping, pulled it tight with her teeth, and held it up to the lamp to check the strands lay true. The boy asked whether she had ever been on a boat that sank. She said only the ones that didn't, which was a poor joke, and he laughed anyway, the way children do when they are not sure they should.

When the lamp dimmed she wound the new rope around the ring and handed the anchor across. "Take this to your mum's van," she said. "Tell her it's paid for in toffee." Eli carried it off through the wet grass, the rope swinging against his knees, and Mabel watched until the tide came in over the slipway and the last lights on the Ferris wheel went out one by one.
