Anchor, heart and birds on the side
Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink anchor with a heart hanging from its shank sits on the side of the body, with three small birds flying away from its upper left. The anchor is drawn with bold outlines and solid black shading, and the heart is left as bare skin inside the anchor's curve. The image is a close, slightly soft phone-style photo on plain skin, with a blue fabric edge at the left.

The last tent of Hollis and Dunmore's Travelling Marvels had stood on the marsh for nine weeks, because no farmer in the county would let them onto dry ground any longer. Mother Vell kept the ledger and the anchor. The anchor was an old iron thing that had come off a coaster wrecked at Harwich, and every night she hooked it to the centre pole so the canvas wouldn't lift in the wind.

Her son Tobin was the only one left who could still walk the high wire. He practised at dusk while the crows came down to the mud to argue. One evening a small brown bird landed on the anchor's stock and would not leave, and Tobin said it meant the season had turned. Vell said birds were only birds, and that the anchor was there to stop the takings blowing away.
Then the spring gale came in off the estuary and the pole began to lean. Tobin climbed it with the guy rope in his teeth, and when he reached the crossbar he saw the birds lift off the iron one after another, heading west toward the hills where nobody had ever asked the circus for anything. The canvas went slack. The pole stood.
In the morning Vell unhooked the anchor and carried it down to the shingle. She did not throw it in. She set it where the tide could reach it and said the wire had its own weight to hold now. The tent came down that week, and every autumn after, the birds came back over the marsh and circled the place where the iron had been.
