Dear Joan,

The late apples are coming down faster than Dad can gather them, so I've given up and started counting windfalls instead. Sixty-one under the Bramley this morning. You'd laugh at me. I keep thinking about the summer you climbed the crooked pear to show the Pritchard boys you weren't frightened, and how you came down with your skirt torn and your shins bleeding, grinning like you'd won the county show.

Mum wants the orchard sold by Michaelmas. The solicitor from Ledbury came on Tuesday in a car the colour of wet slate and walked the rows with his hands in his pockets, stepping over the rotten fruit as though it might bite. I didn't tell him about the two boys who used to sit on the high limb, swearing they were lions guarding the gate. I didn't tell him that's where our old names for the trees came from.

So I've decided something foolish. I'm going up the pear tomorrow with a tin of black paint and a brush from the shed, and I'm going to mark our initials on the bark where the branch curls round like a cat's back. If the buyer wants the trees gone, let him find our letters first.

Come home for the weekend. Bring the boy. Bring nothing that needs watering.

Your loving brother, Pete
