Anchor with rope on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A single anchor sits upright on the leg, with a cross bar at the top and a ring at the crown. Rope is wrapped around the shank and tied at the base, and the metal is shaded in grey with black outlines. The anchor fill has muted reddish-brown tones, and the image is framed tightly on the tattoo against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Nell, the wind has dropped at last and the Mary Ashworth is sitting like a duck on flat water somewhere south of the Azores, so I have a moment to write properly. Cook says we'll raise Falmouth within the fortnight if the easterlies hold, though Cook has said that since Tuesday. The ship's carpenter spent the afternoon splicing a new length of manila onto the fore stay, and I sat on the hatch cover and watched him work the strands apart with a marlinspike like a man unpicking a knot in a sweetheart's hair. He taught me the old way of seizing a rope to an iron ring, six turns and a hitch, so the load goes round and not against. I have been practising on my boot laces.

The anchor is still below, lashed in the chains where it has been since Madeira, and I think of it more than I should. It is a poor, stubborn thing to look at, black with age and pitted where the salt has got into it, but it held us off a lee shore at Lisbon when the cable parted and the bower dragged. Mr Pryce says a good anchor earns its keep by never being noticed. I told him that was a fine way to describe a husband, and he laughed so hard he had to hold on to the rail.

When we're home I mean to have the rope done in ink, the proper way, the turns and the hitch exactly as the carpenter showed me, so that wherever I end up I can look down and know the thing will hold. Tell Father I have not drowned, and tell your mother the crockery in the trunk is wrapped in my good shirt, so she needn't fuss about the bottom rim. I'll write from Falmouth if the post is quicker than the ship.

Your loving brother, Tom
