Crown and anchor with script lettering
Traditional · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo shows a crown with jewelled detailing sitting above an anchor, with a rope coiled around the shank. The words My King and My Anchor are written in flowing script above and below the motif. Bold outlines and fine shading give the design depth against the skin, and the composition is centred and vertical.

Dear Davey, the gulls have been at the tallow again, and the Herring King's crown is back on its hook above the Ship Inn, dented where the Mallows boy dropped it on the quay. Mam says I should stop writing letters that will sit in your oilskin pocket until the fish are landed, but I like the thought of you reading my scrawl with salt on your thumbs.

The anchor you hauled up from the Silver Gull's wreck came back with the tide last Tuesday. It sat on our step like a dog that had found its own way home. I've coiled the old hemp round its shank the way you showed me, three turns and a bight, so the rope won't chafe the iron. Old Ada from the chandlery says a rope round an anchor is a promise that somebody is still holding on at the other end.
The committee wants a man to carry the crown up the slipway on Saturday. I told them there's only one king in Pelham Cove and he's out past the Dogger with his hands in the nets. So I've kept your place laid at the table and the lamp lit in the window, and when the boats come round the point I'll be the first one down the steps, rope in hand, to pull you in.
Yours, with the knot still tied, Nell
