Anchor with watercolour splash on forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A line drawing of an anchor with a rope wrapped around the shank sits on the forearm, shown from the side against a plain white wall. The anchor is outlined in black with light grey shading inside its form. Behind it, soft watercolour splashes in blue, purple, red, orange and yellow fade out around the edges, giving a mixed-colour effect.

Tom, the ice on the trough was thick enough this morning that I had to break it with the hoe, and Dad says to tell you the heifers have started coming into the top field where the drain runs. I am writing at the kitchen table with the lamp turned low to save the paraffin, and the stove ticking as it cools.

The parcel came with the carrier on Tuesday, the one you tied with too much string. Inside was your drawing of the anchor, done in pencil on the back of a seed catalogue, and the tin of paints you said a man in Grimsby swore was what the wreck artists used. I have propped the anchor on the dresser against the jug. Mum asked why I'd put a sailor's picture among the eggs, and I said it was the only thing in this house that has ever been further from home than the market.
The colours are running in the damp. The blue has crept over the rope and the red has bled out near the flukes like something spilt. I didn't tell you that Mr Pell's boy came up to look at it and asked whether the anchor was for holding ships or holding the water in. I said I'd ask you, so I am asking. Did you ever get the thing to sink properly, or does it only ever drag?
Write soon. The plough team has gone lame, and I'd rather hear about a ship than the price of mangolds.
