Watercolour anchor on a foot

Other · Colour · Photo

A watercolour-style anchor with a thin outlined ring at the top and a coiled rope along the shank sits on the top of a foot near the toes. The painted fills blend pink, orange, yellow, blue and green with soft bleeding edges, while the outlines and rope are darker and more defined. Loose coloured splashes spread around the ring and above the anchor, and the image is a close side view on a white towel.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The morning of the wedding in Porthavel came up grey, and the ring was nowhere. Tamsin's father turned out every drawer in the net loft while the fiddler sat on the harbour wall tuning his strings and the village stood about in its good coats, saying nothing useful.

The painter had come over on the Tuesday boat, a thin man with paint under his nails who asked only for a bed in the loft and a plate of pilchards. He had spent three days on the quay drawing the crabbers, and at dusk he wet his brushes in the harbour and dabbed colour onto the stern of old Jory's boat until pink and gold ran together like sunset in a puddle. Tamsin had watched him work and asked for an anchor there too, a proper one with a rope wound round its shank, because her husband would be going out on that boat for the rest of his life and she wanted something on it to hold fast.

The ring was found that noon, tucked inside the coil of rope on Jory's stern, where the painter had hidden it for safe keeping after he heard how careless the bridegroom was with small things. Tamsin's father laughed until he had to sit down on a lobster pot.

They were married as the tide turned. The splashes had dried by then, and the painted anchor caught the sun, its colours still soft at the edges, while the bride walked down the quay with the fiddler behind her and the gulls going quiet over the water.
