Anchor, starfish and wave on an ankle
Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A shaded grey anchor with rope around its shank sits over a pink starfish, with a blue and teal wave curling beneath it and small bubbles scattered above. The anchor has grey shading and highlights, while the starfish and wave use softer blended colour. The tattoo sits on the ankle against a textured pale wall, with the foot and lower leg in frame.

Dear Ruth, the anchor came up on Tuesday fast enough, but it came up with a starfish wrapped round the shank as if it had been holding on for dear life. Dad said leave it, so I did, and it lay on the deck going orange in the sun while Pete swore at the winch. I kept thinking it would die, but Jonno reckoned they can grow back an arm, which seems a bit much for one morning's work.

We had a rough week after that. The wind backed round to the west on Thursday and we ran for the lee of the breakwater with the swell lifting us like we weighed nothing. Mum will have told you about the Kestrel. I won't write it out. What I will say is that when we finally tied up, the first thing I did was walk to the end of the quay and look at the water, that green-blue colour curling in over the stones as if it had something to say and no patience left for saying it.
I took the starfish back out on the Sunday, in the little tender, and put it over the side in about four fathoms. It went down slow, turning, the way they do, and the bubbles came up after it in a string. I thought about the anchor on the deck, how heavy it is and how it still has to hold on to whatever it finds. Dad's old one is in the shed if you want it, the one with the rope round the shank. Bring the kids down at half term. The tide's good for the rockpools then.
