Angel quote with a red trident

Lettering · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo is a block of black typewriter-style text reading 'An Angel who did not so much Fall as Saunter Vaguely Downwards.' To the right sits a small red trident with a gold ring around its shaft, drawn with clean outlines. The ink is crisp against a reddened area of skin, and the text is set in left-aligned lines with the trident placed beside the final lines.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Late August, and the Bramleys at Pudding Hollow hung so low the village boys had given up climbing them. That was the week the angel came down, though nobody saw him arrive. Mrs Orme found him sitting on the orchard wall at dusk, peeling a windfall with his thumbnail, and he said he had not fallen so much as wandered off the edge of things and taken the scenic route.

He stayed on as a hand for Tom Abney, who was too tired to ask questions. The angel worked the orchard with a pitchfork that had a brass ring bound round the shaft below the tines, to stop the wood splitting in wet weather. He would not put it down. He turned it in the evening light and hummed hymns he had got slightly wrong, and when Tom asked where he had learned to garden, he said he had been in management.

By September the wasps had given up on the fallen fruit, which was odd, because the angel had told them to be patient. 'Nothing that falls in a hurry has anywhere it needs to be,' he said, and went on raking. Mrs Abney called him a poor worker and a worse liar. He agreed with both and asked whether there was any cider.

He left at Michaelmas, walking out between the rows at a stroll, and he took nothing but the fork. Tom found the ring in the grass the next spring, bright as a coin, and the trees at Pudding Hollow have fruited a little earlier every year since, as if the whole orchard were in no hurry to reach the bottom of the hill.
