Ada Pardoe drove it herself, three mornings a week, loaves stacked in wicker to the roof and her late husband's name painted on the door in gold that had started to flake. The night of the thaw that never came, the lane gave way under the near wheels and the van tipped nose first into the ditch with the engine still ticking. Ada climbed out through the window with a split lip and one tin loaf under her arm, sat down in the wet, and laughed until the farmer came up the lane with his lamp.

Here is the part they leave out at the village hall. Her brother-in-law wanted the van hauled out and the whole round given up. Ada said no. She walked the four miles to the next village in her boots, knocked up the baker there at half past four, and borrowed his flour, his ovens and a barrow. By the time the sun came over the ridge there was bread on every step along that road, and a slip of paper in each bag in her square capitals: so hold your head up high, and know it's not the end of the road.
