Block quote tattoo on the thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A multi-line paragraph of cursive and serif script is tattooed across the outer thigh, with a large decorative capital letter at the start of each block. The lettering is rendered in fine black linework with soft grey shading, and the lines slope diagonally across the skin. The photograph is black and white, cropped at the waist, and shows the top of a knit garment and denim shorts beside the tattoo.

Sit down, the lot of you, and stop rattling those paper cups, because the canvas is already sagging and I am only going to tell this once. Forty winters ago the Marvello Brothers pitched their last big top on a wet common outside Huddersfield, and the strongwoman of the troupe, Agnes Dowd, who could lift a pony with one arm, stood in the sawdust and refused to sing for the manager. She said she had been singing other people's songs since she was nine.

The manager, a thin man called Lowther, docked her wages and told her she had no one to lean on out here, no husband, no family, only his contract. Agnes folded her arms and laughed until the lamps swayed. "Then I have nothing to apologise for," she said, and walked out past the elephant, who as far as anyone knew never had a single regret.
She took the old grey pony, a bundle of tent poles and a tin of gold leaf she had won at cards, and set up her own act in a chip shop car park in Keighley. Within a month the queue ran past the chemist's and out onto the main road. Nobody ever saw her lean on anyone again.
So when you ask me what became of the Marvello Brothers, I tell you the truth: the big top went to the scrap man and the lions went to a farm in Wales. But on the morning Agnes left Keighley she painted one line across the tailboard of her wagon in gold leaf, and it is still there if you know where to look. Now finish your toffee and go home. This is the day your life really begins, or so the sign says.
