Angel wing and script quote on the side
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single outlined angel wing curves up on the right, with feathers drawn in fine black linework and light shading at the base. Beneath it, two lines of cursive script read Angels never leave and They're always at your side, running diagonally across pale skin. The image is a close, slightly angled photo in black ink and grey tones, with dark fabric filling the upper left corner.

Halfway across the footbridge a gull sits on the rail as if it owns the river. You stop to watch the water go black under the lamps, and a man in a wax jacket asks you the time. You tell him. He says his mum always called the hours between two and four the ones that belong to people who can't sleep, then he walks off before you can ask what she meant.
At the bottom of the steps the stairwell smells of bleach and wet paper. Someone has chalked a wing on the wall beside the lift, feathers fanned out, and under it in careful capitals: THEY DON'T LEAVE, THEY JUST GET QUIETER. You don't know who wrote it. You take out your phone and photograph it anyway, the way you'd keep a ticket from a journey you didn't know you'd finished.
Upstairs the flat is cold. You fill the kettle and say nothing to the empty chair by the window, then you say it anyway, under your breath, that you're home. Across the road a light in another window blinks twice, and for once you don't mind being one of the people still awake.
