Script quote and daisy on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cursive script reads in a world of my own across the forearm, with a feather-like swash rising above the word world. A single daisy with petals outlined in dark blue sits at the right end of the line, with some shading inside the centre. The ink is a single dark blue against pale skin, and the composition is a horizontal band across the forearm on a teal background.

The seed drawer sticks, as it always has, and you work the frosted lid loose with your thumb. Inside, under the grey light of the Halden relay, the packets sit in rows the way your grandmother labelled them: Oxeye, Shasta, Ox-daisy, and a brown envelope marked only "Mum's, don't use". The station drones have started asking why the stock count is short, so you take the envelope out, partly to answer them and partly because you want to know what she was hoping for.

Inside is no seed at all, just a sheet of thin paper folded around a pressed daisy whose petals have gone the colour of old ink. Her handwriting loops across the margin, repeating the same line until the paper nearly tears: in a world of my own, in a world of my own. You remember her humming it over the hydroponic beds, deaf to the hatch cycle, and the shift council calling it her absence. You had always called it her weather.
Below the repeated line is one more sentence, written smaller: plant one where the light is wrong, things grow strangest there. You carry the packet down to bay seven, where the lamps burn a bruised violet because someone cut the spectrum to save power years ago.
You kneel on the grating and press a seed into the wet grit with one fingertip. For the first time in months the station hum seems to sit lower, as if it has shifted aside to make room. The bloom will take nine weeks. You have already decided not to tell the council.
