The summer his wife died, he planted a single pear tree against the north wall and talked to it the way other men talk to their dogs. Nobody heard most of it. But young Silas Crane, who fetched the vegetables for the almshouse, swore he caught Amos at dusk telling the tree that they were never gone, not really. They only stood just behind your shoulder, where the lamplight didn't reach.
When the pear finally bore, Amos cut one wing from the first split branch, shaved it down with his penknife, and nailed it above the gate with the feathers pointing towards the lane. Silas asked him why a wing and not a face. Amos pushed his cap back and said a face could be looked at, but a wing was for keeping you company while you looked the other way.
So walk on now, and pull that gate to behind you. Don't turn round to check. Somebody is almost certainly at your side.
