Angel wings across a back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows the back of a person, with a large pair of feathered angel wings tattooed across the shoulder blades and down the spine. The feathers are rendered in detailed, layered shading with dark outlines, creating depth and a three-dimensional look. The tattoo is in black and grey tones with soft highlights, and the wings fill most of the frame with the head cropped out at the top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wings had come back from the Co-op hall in a state, two of the primaries snapped and a tin of glue gone to lumps. Ada Pickering laid them flat across the cutting table at the back of the drapery on Chapel Street and sat with her spectacles low on her nose, deciding which feathers could be saved. Outside, the rain had been coming down since dinner, thin and grey as the Whit Sunday bunting that sagged between the lamp posts.

Her nephew Terry came through from the shop with a cup of stewed tea and set it by her elbow without spilling a drop. He was twelve and had been told he could be an angel in the procession only if he kept his hands off the glue. 'Do they really fly?' he asked, touching a feather with one finger. 'Only if somebody lifts them,' Ada said. 'Wings never did much on their own.'

She worked through the afternoon, binding each broken quill with thread the colour of wet slate, until the light went out of the window and the gas lamp across the road began to hum. The wings grew stiff and heavy in her lap. Her husband Frank had made the frame years ago, steaming and bending ash in the yard, and she could still see the dent in the left-hand spar where he'd dropped the mallet laughing.

When she finished, she carried the wings to the back window and held them up against the dark, the feathers catching the lamplight in their layers, grey and rust and nearly silver at the tips. Terry asked which one was the best. She didn't answer. She pushed up the sash and let the damp air in, and a single loose feather lifted from the edge and drifted out over the yard, turning slowly, until the rain took it.
