Wing tattoo on an ankle
Realism · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic wing tattoo shows layered feathers with fine shading and highlights, tapering from the lower leg toward the ankle. The work is rendered in black and grey ink with soft gradients across the coverts and a sharp outline along the outer edge. The leg fills the frame against a plain light wall and wooden floor, with the wing centred on the ankle.

Sit yourselves down on the bench, there's room if you shuffle, and mind the wet patch by the pillar. Right. This was the winter the signal box at Thornby Junction burned down, and the only one who didn't panic was old Hollis, the night porter, who had a bad hip, a worse temper, and a tin of Rich Tea under the ticket counter for the strays.

One night in January a bird came in through the broken pane above the left luggage lockers. Not a pigeon, mind. A grey-brown thing with one wing bent at the elbow, dragging it along the tiles like a torn umbrella. Hollis flapped his cap at it and it shot straight up into the girders and hung there beating at nothing, until the 10.40 to Carlisle came through and the whole roof rang like a bell. Then it dropped, plump as a loaf, onto the platform at his feet.
He carried it out to the cold and sat it on the edge of the bench and fed it a corner of biscuit. When he lifted the good wing to look underneath, the lamplight went through every feather like tissue paper, and the edges were dark and tight and exact. He said he'd never seen anything so finely made in his life, and he'd spent forty years reading the timetable printers' work.
Come March, he carried it up to the level crossing and opened his hands. It went up over the cutting in one long pull and came down on the signal gantry, and it sat there looking at him like a clerk checking a ticket. Hollis walked home that morning without his cap. There's a grey feather pinned above the ticket office kettle to this day, if you know where to look. Mind your heads on the way out.
