A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ivy Prowse had been stitching feathers onto the same pair of wings for eleven winters, and the canvas had gone soft as a glove at the shoulder seams. The Halloran Brothers Travelling Circus was down to two elephants, a pony that would only kneel for sugar, and a flyer named Sela Marr who refused to come down from the rigging until someone agreed to pay her in cash.

Ivy pinned the last grey pinion on the left wing while the tent roof dripped into a bucket beside the ring. The wind had got under the canvas all week, and every evening it sounded like a crowd deciding whether to leave. Sela swung down to watch, hair tied back with a length of kitchen string, and tapped the feathers one by one as though counting them.

"They'll not hold the drop," Sela said. "Not with the rain in them."

"They'll hold if you don't flap like a goose," Ivy said, and bit off the thread. She had sewn a spine down the middle of the harness, a silver ornament of twisted iron scrolls that caught the lamplight whenever the girl turned. The brothers had wanted it painted on the posters. Ivy had insisted on the real thing, because a wing you could see from the back of the hall was worth more than one you could only imagine.

On the last night the sky cleared over the car park. Sela climbed the rope, spread the wings, and for one long breath the whole tent went quiet, a hundred people in damp coats forgetting their toffee. Then she let go. Ivy watched the grey feathers catch the floodlights and understood that the wings had never been for flying. They were for the falling, and for the seconds before the net.
