Owl with spread wings across upper back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman seen from behind, with her hair pulled up and a knitted scarf around her neck, shows a detailed owl with wings fully spread across her upper back. The owl is rendered in fine linework with soft grey shading on the feathers and face. A floral sleeve is visible on her raised arm against a blurred, grey outdoor background.

The bird on the tide-station's ledger was the first thing the archivists taught you to read, long before the numbers. Barn owl, they said, the kind that once hunted the reed beds the river had swallowed. Nobody had seen one alive in three hundred years, so the wall-screen ran its ghost pictures every dawn and you copied the wings stroke by stroke onto the slate with a stylus that skipped on the cold.

Your job was to log the water. Every hour the gauges at Wrenmouth reported how far the estuary had climbed up the old motorway pylons, and every hour you typed the figure into the Ministry sheet and watched the green cursor blink as though it were waiting for permission. The owl on the wall did not wait. It hung there, wings flung wide over the dark glass, eyes fixed on something below the frame.

On the fortieth night of the hard frost, the gauge at Pylon Nine stopped answering. You took the skiff out with a lamp and a coil of cable, the water black and oily and quiet as a held breath. Halfway across, a shape lifted from the rushes, pale as paper, and came down on the bow rail with a sound like a folded sheet. It turned its heart-shaped face towards you and blinked, slow and unbothered.

You did not log that. You fixed the gauge, which had only iced over, and rowed home with the bird keeping pace above the spray, its wings spread against the moon. When you reached the tower you pinned a copy of the drawing beside the ledger and wrote beneath it, in your own hand, the reading for the day: water steady, owl returned.
