Angel wings tattoo across a back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman seen from behind sits on a leopard print towel, her back covered by a large pair of angel wings. The feathers are shaded in grey and black with fine, detailed linework that follows the natural layers of the wings. The composition is centred on the back, with a beach and people in the background and a small dark tattoo visible on her forearm.

Every spring the crows came back to the pithead wheel, and every spring Nell Harries climbed the bank with a sack and gathered what they dropped. Her husband had gone down number four in the year of the flood and never come up, so she kept the feathers in a biscuit tin under the stairs, grey ones and black ones, sorted by the length of the quill.

Her neighbours said it was a sad habit. The chapel minister said it was a worse one, but he said it kindly, over tea, with his hat on his knee.
The winter the roof fell at the lower seam, her grandson Dai was caught under the timbers with two other men. The rescue crew dug for three days. On the third morning a boy from the next row, who had been fetching coal for the tallyman, swore he saw a grey bird sitting on the heap of rubble with its wings held out flat, as if it were shielding something. When they got through, all three were breathing, and the bird was gone.
Nell did not tell anyone what she made of it. She took the tin out from under the stairs and laid the feathers across the kitchen table, fitting them into a pair of wings by the light of the lamp, row over row, the way the crows laid their own. She stitched them onto an old flannel shirt of her husband's and hung it on the back of the door, where it stayed until the pit closed.
