Hummingbird tattoo on the side ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small hummingbird in flight faces right, with its wings raised and its long beak extended. The linework is fine and the feathers are shaded in black and grey ink, giving some depth to the wings and body. The bird sits on the side of the torso against a bright blue sky with white clouds, and the photograph is taken outdoors.

Brother Anselm had kept the herb beds at Santa Brígida for thirty winters and had never once seen a bird stay still long enough to be blessed. The hummingbirds came for the salvia along the cloister wall, hanging in the air like thrown pins, and they were gone before the bell for Terce had finished ringing. He resented them a little, the way he resented anything that moved faster than prayer.

On the morning the abbot sent word that the visiting bishop would take his coffee in the garden, Anselm found a bird caught in the netting over the seed trays. It was no longer than his thumb, its wings beating against the knotted cord with a sound like a struck match. He freed it with fingers stiff from the cold. It did not fly off. It sat on his knuckle, beak pointed at the wall, and regarded him with the flat impatience of a clerk.

He carried it to the bench beside the fig tree and waited. Nothing happened for a long while. Then the bird lifted, hung before his face for the length of an Ave Maria, and shot over the roof tiles toward the valley.

The bishop never came. The letter had been meant for another house, as Anselm learned at midday. He was glad of it and told no one about the bird, though he found himself at Terce the following week, and every week after, with a dish of sugar water set on the wall where the salvia grew.
