Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with long brown hair is photographed from behind, showing a vertical line of paisley and floral motifs down the centre of her back. The linework is fine and detailed, with dotted shading and filled petals in dark ink. The background is a calm blue sea and a rocky shore, with the subject in the lower foreground.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, you with the wet feet, and mind the lamp. The tale is of Zara, a weaver's daughter in Srinagar, where the chinar trees burn red in autumn and the saffron sellers shout their prices from the bridges. Her father wove shawls with the little bent-seed pattern that the English call paisley, though in the valley we only ever called it the boteh, the bud. He carried the pattern in his head and nowhere else, because the old shawl-master had died before he could write it down.

Every evening Zara walked the long garden behind the house, where the roses were clipped into the shapes of birds, and she studied the ferns that curled at the foot of the wall. She learned that a fern unfurls the way a boteh curls, from a closed tip outward, each frond smaller than the one before. When the monsoon came she stood in the rain and counted the petals of a marigold until the number was right, and then she counted them again.

Her father went blind that winter. Zara sat at his loom with his hands resting over hers for a month, and then she wove alone. The shawl that came off the loom had the buds running down its centre, one stacked upon another like lanterns, with a great flowering head at the top and another at the foot. When the merchant from Lahore unrolled it, he held it to the window and said nothing for a long time.

Now the lamp is low and the merchant's cart is rattling away down the valley road. Somewhere past Rawalpindi a shawl is being unrolled in a shop window, and the buds run down it like lanterns, each one counted in the rain.
