Angry eyes tattoo on the back of a head

Other · Mixed · Photo

A close view of the back of a shaved head showing a tattoo of two scowling eyes with heavy dark brows and brown irises. A shaded, mouth-like line sits below the eyes, and the grey shading gives the design a raised, three-dimensional look. The image is centred and evenly lit against a plain black background.

Every morning before the bells of St Brannoc rang, old Edda Marl lit her ovens by feel, because the lamp in the back room threw more shadow than light. Her apprentice, Piers Oddy, was a lazy lad with quick hands. One grey morning he reached past her for the cooling rack, meaning to slip two split tins under his coat for the fair at Hollin Cross. He had his fingers on the bread when the eyes behind her head opened. They were wide and brown and furious, with brows drawn down like a gate shutting, and Piers dropped the loaf as if it had burned him.

Edda did not turn round. She went on folding the dough. "Those belong to the abbey," she said, "and so does the flour you were going to sell, and so do the three coins you took from the tin last Michaelmas." Piers went red to the ears. He spent the rest of that week scrubbing the oven floor and counting every loaf twice before he touched it.

On the seventh morning the shutters were still dark when he came in early, ashamed and quiet. Edda was already at the trough. The sun was only a thin line over the marsh, and the scowl behind her head seemed to soften in the first grey light. She broke the top off a loaf still warm from the oven and held it out over her shoulder without looking. "Eat that," she said. "Then start on the next batch."
