Red clawed creature with open jaws on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a red, scaled creature with raised clawed hands framing a snouted face with an open, toothed mouth. The shading is smooth and realistic, with glossy highlights on the red skin and soft gradients on the yellowish face. Dark clouds and a pale moon fill the background, and the composition wraps around the forearm.

The lamp had guttered twice on the stair before Maud Penrose admitted to herself that the draught was not coming from the arrow slits. She held the light higher, past the cracked newel and the empty niche where the saint's head had once stood, and listened. Below her the cellars of Hollin Keep breathed out a cold that smelt of wet slate and something sweeter, like fruit left too long in a bowl.

The creature was waiting on the landing, not crouched but standing, taller than the doorway it filled. Its red hide shone in the lamplight like fresh paint, and it lifted both hands as if to bless her or to stop her, the claws long and curved as sickles. Behind it the window had no glass left, only the pale moon hanging over the battlements and a bank of cloud the colour of old bruises.

It opened its jaws and she saw the teeth, yellow as candle wax. She did not scream. She had kept the keep for thirty winters and knew the rule her grandmother had carved above the postern: the thing in the cellar was never hungry for the living, only for the names it had been called. 'Enough, Ash,' she said, steadying her voice. 'You've been called enough.' The mouth closed. After a long moment the hands came down.

At first light the postern stood open and the gate chain lay coiled in the wet grass like a sleeping snake. Maud walked the wall with the lamp still burning, though the sun no longer needed her help, and counted the stones until she reached the one with the scratched red mark. She left the postern unbarred that night, and every night after, and nothing with a moon behind its head ever climbed the stair again.
