Realistic eye with savanna reflection on forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A realistic eye fills the forearm, with dark feathered lashes and brows framing a golden amber iris and a vertical slit pupil. The iris reflects a savanna landscape with elephants, bare and leafy trees and a pale sky, rendered with fine shading and detailed texture. Warm yellows and browns dominate the iris, with blue and grey tones in the sky and surrounding skin shading.

The customs post at Sallow Gate had one barrier, painted white and red, and one officer who never blinked with his left eye. Drivers joked about it. Old carters said he had traded that eye at the last crossing for a window onto the grasslands beyond, and that was why the iris was the colour of dry wheat, and why, if you stood close enough, you could see a pale sky in it, bare thorn trees, and grey elephants walking slow towards the water.

A woman came up the road one wet morning with a lorry of blue cloth and a folder of papers held shut with string. Her name was Adaeze Morrow. She had a cough, and a boy asleep in the cab. Osei checked the cloth, then the papers, then he leaned close to the window and looked for a long time at her face. He did not say anything. He only tilted his head so the left eye caught the grey light, and in it she could see the herd moving, a calf pressed against its mother's flank.
'They are going the same way as you,' he said at last. 'Your father's village is past the thorn ridge. The water is still there.'
He lifted the barrier. The slit in his eye narrowed against the sun, the way a cat's does, and he raised one hand as the lorry rolled through. Behind her the road ran back into the rain. Osei lowered the barrier again and went back to watching the far country, which he had only ever seen by looking at it.
