Angular lettering on the back of the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the back of a person's neck, with their dark hair pulled up and away. A small fine line tattoo of angular, geometric letterforms that resemble the word GOD sits centrally on the skin. The image is black and white, with a checked collar in the lower part of the frame.

Dear Tom, the chisel skated again this morning, so the bowl of the O on the Pilchard Quay memorial came out as a sharp point, and Mr Penhallow has asked for it recut before the regatta crowds arrive. I told him slate doesn't forgive curves, which is what Dad always said, and it's true. Every stroke has to be straight and decided, or the stone splits along the grain and you've lost a whole evening's work.

Mrs Ruan came down to the yard on Thursday with a folded paper in her coat pocket. Inside was the name of her husband, Jack, who went out with the Mary Ellen in the winter of '61 and was never found. She wanted it cut in the old hard angles, the ones Dad used on the fishermen's stones, and she wanted nothing soft in it at all. She stood by the bench while I drew it out in pencil, and when I got to the last letter she put her finger on the paper and said, 'That one. Make it lean into the wind.'
I don't know what she meant, but I did it. The letter came out like a folded arm, braced against something you can't see. She paid in coins and didn't wait for the change. Tonight I'm sitting on the wall above the slipway with the lamp unlit, watching the tide come over the chalk marks I made this morning for the new lettering. By the time you read this they'll be under the water, and the stone will still be waiting for its last cut.
