Angular lettering with chevrons on an arm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a thin black outline tattoo on a person's arm. It shows angular capital letters joined by chevron-shaped symbols, drawn with even, single-weight linework. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the design sits centred in a plain, neatly framed close-up.

You learn the chevrons before you learn the letters. Your aunt Nell keeps the narrow gouge that cuts them into the beech at the forest's edge, where the village lane gives up and becomes a path. Three strokes, two arms angled back, pointing the way home. She draws one on a stub of wood and slides it across the bench to you. "Cut them where you won't have to stop and look," she says, "because in fog you will not be looking at anything else."

One October the mist comes down thick as wool and the lane to Hollin Farm vanishes before the first gate. Mrs Abernethy's boy is out with the goats and has not come back. You take the lantern and the small gouge and go in by the marked trunks, reading each chevron with your thumb as much as your eye, the grooves still pale where the cut is fresh. Every mark is a turn you have already made. The forest keeps no other record.
Near the stream you find a mark that is not yours. Someone has cut letters beside the chevrons, three plain capitals, angular and certain, and the wood is still weeping sap at the edges. You stand there longer than you should, reading the word the way you read a turn, and understand that this is not a warning. It is a boy's hand, following the same grammar you taught him, pointing the way someone else could find.
You follow the arrows back to the farm. At the last beech before the gate you press your thumb into the fresh cut and feel the direction under your skin, home, the way it has always been.
