Fine line angular symbols on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of thin black angular symbols, including a chevron and a rightward arrow shape, sits on the inner arm. The linework is fine and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The ink is set against pale skin on a plain background, and the composition is tight and centred on the design.

The signal box at Thornley Junction smelled of paraffin and wet coats, and Edith Marsh had the lever frame to herself until the six o'clock goods. She kept the block instruments ticking and the crossing log in pencil, and she had learned to read the angular code the old porters chalked on the board by the door, short marks that meant nothing to the inspectors and everything to the men on the footplates.

Tonight the chalk showed the same three marks it had shown for a week: a chevron pointing east, a bent stroke, and a long arrow, with nothing beneath them. Edith rubbed a thumb over the board. Her brother Alfred had cut that code into the lintel of the shed before he went to France, so drivers would know the line was clear without a word passing across the gap. He had not come back to read it.
At ten past eleven the bell rang twice from Hollin Cross. Edith pulled the home signal, watched the arm drop, and waited for the answering chalk. Headlamps swung round the curve, slow and careful, and the goods crawled through under the sign. Its guard leaned from the van, raised a hand, then chalked a fresh mark on the post beside the points: the chevron, the bent stroke, and the arrow, this time pointing back the way it had come.
She wrote it in the log in pencil: clear. Then, because nobody would ever check, she drew the arrow again underneath and went back to the levers.
