Antelope filled with tree branches on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of an antelope with long curved horns, shown in profile on the outer forearm. The body is built from fine branching tree limbs that fade into dotted shading toward the legs and lower edges. The design sits centrally on a plain background, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

Dear Sam,

The 4.10 came in forty minutes late again, so I had time to sweep the platform twice and still watch the signalman argue with a crate of hens. Mr Oakes says the line will be double tracked by spring, which he has said every spring since you left. I have stopped believing him and started believing the ash tree behind the goods shed instead, because it at least keeps its leaves on schedule.
Something has happened to the parcels office. Mrs Pryce brought in a kudu horn wrapped in brown paper, sent up from a dock in Bristol by a man who never collected it. It was meant for a gentleman in Shrewsbury, and the label has come unstuck. We have hung it on the nail above the stove, and in this light the bony twist of it throws shadows across the whitewash like branches. Last Tuesday I stood under it with the lamp and swear the shadow had grown leaves. Mrs Pryce says I need sleep. She may be right.
I walked out to the ash after closing and found a wren's nest in the crook where the old limb was cut. The whole trunk is alive with twigs, thin as hair, and when the wind comes off the cutting the tree looks as though it is trying to stand up on four legs. I think you would laugh at me. I wish you were here to do it.
Write when you can. Tell me whether the country out there has any animals that run like that, so I know what to look for when the lamps go out.
Your loving sister, Ada
