Geometric stag head on an arm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A stag's head with large antlers is shown in front of two overlapping outlined triangles and a faint dotted circle. The left half of the head is rendered as sharp, faceted lines, while the right half has fine stippled and hatched shading that gives the fur and eye a more realistic finish. The tattoo is in black and grey ink on smooth skin, with the design centred in the frame.

The crossing from the mainland takes three hours in fair weather, and the boatman has already said he will not wait past the turn of the tide. You step onto the landing with a tin of paraffin under one arm and the logbook under the other, and the first thing you see is the stag standing on the weed below the lamp room, as if it had been posted there.

It is October, the year the Board finally sent the great lens north to be cleaned. Halloran, the keeper you are replacing, has left a note pinned to the kettle: Don't look at it straight. He never says what he means. The lamp turns its prisms and throws its light in hard angled planes across the water, and the stag stands inside those planes, one flank sharp as cut crystal, the other soft with wet fur and breath.
Each night you climb the ninety-six steps, trim the wick, and find the stag in the lee of the wall, neither leaving nor coming any closer. On the eleventh night you carry down a flask of tea and set it on the rock. By morning the stag has gone, the flask is empty, and a split hoof print is pressed into the wet sand just above the tideline.
You write the weather in the log: calm, visibility good. Then, under remarks, you write what Halloran never did. That evening you wind the clockwork and watch the beam sweep out over the sound, and for the first time you see both halves of the light at once, the sharp facets and the soft ones, falling on the same black rock.
