Mags Pennock had sworn she would not dance with the stranger who came in off the moor road smelling of wet bracken, but the fiddler at the Plough struck up a reel and her feet had opinions of their own. The hall was low-beamed and steamy, the windows running with breath, and every girl in Hexworth was pretending not to watch the man by the door. He wore a coat too thin for October, and his hat sat crooked over a pair of branching antlers that he had not bothered to hide.

"Mind the ceiling," said her brother Tom, who had seen nothing strange at all, because Tom had drunk three pints of cider and could no longer see past his own nose.

She danced anyway. The stranger's hands were cold and dry, and when he turned her under the lamp she saw his eyes, long and amber, set far apart in a face that twitched at the whiskers whenever the fiddle rose. He did not speak. He only tapped one long foot in time, and each tap sounded like a knuckle on a door.

At the last chorus the lamps guttered and the room went dark, and when they flared again the stranger was gone. Mags stood alone in the middle of the floor with a single grey hair caught on her sleeve. Beyond the steamed glass, in the field behind the inn, something bounded away over the stubble with a rack of bone held high, unhurried, as if it had only stepped out to stretch its legs.
